The Department of Business Studies under the School of Business Studies has been established with a vision to strive to achieve excellence in the field of Business Studies through multi-disciplinary approach and foster entrepreneurial and managerial talent among students who with their core competence, can carve their own niche in the highly competitive world. The mission of the department is to nurture and shape positive attitude, competencies and capabilities among the students who can apply entrepreneurial skills, management concepts, tools and techniques, and ethical principles in sustaining/creating socially responsive organizations, institutions and enterprises that are vital for the growth and development of the region, nation and the world at large.

       The department offers two year four semesters MBA programme with specialization in Marketing, Finance and Human Resource Management and a three year six semester stand-alone BBA programme in addition to PhD programme. The courses are dynamic in nature and are modified from time to time to address the requirements of the corporate and industries. In order to equip the students to assume the diverse roles of business executives to entrepreneurs the pedagogy adopted by the department comprises of games, role plays, quiz, industrial visit and group exercises in addition to lectures, seminars and case methods. The department also arranges interaction with industry/business executives, renowned management consultants, leaders from NGOs and civil societies and reputed academicians for the benefit of students to impart practical orientation. Students are evaluated through continuous internal components of class test, presentations and assignments; and the end term exams.

       The department organizes workshops, series of guest lectures by the industry practioners and academicians from reputed organizations of the country throughout the year. In order to give the practical exposure to the working of the industry postgraduate students are sent on the industrial visit to different places every year.

About the Programs :


Standalone in Management (BBA)

       Standalone program in management is a three year program. Students are exposed to the broad areas of management through an extensive syllabus, which includes a Foundation Course, Language Courses, and Social Orientation Courses in addition to courses in core and allied areas of management. Students get an opportunity to specialise in any one area in marketing, finance and human resource management at the Masters level.

Master of Business Administration (MBA)

       In the MBA program the students are taught core courses which include Management Concepts and Approaches, Managerial Accounting and Finance, Marketing, Organizational Behaviour, Human Resource Management, Quantitative Techniques, Managerial Economics, Computer Application in Management, Communication and Personal Effectiveness, Operations Management, Research Methodology and Business Environment. During the second year, the students have the opportunity to specialize in two selected areas of their interest out of Marketing, Finance and Human Recourse Management in addition to core papers like Strategic Management, International Business and Entrepreneurship. These specializations are offered through electives and project work spread over the two semesters. In order to give the practical exposure to the working of the industry, postgraduate students are sent on the industrial visit to different places every year. During the summer between the second and third semester students shall undergo internship for eight weeks and submit a report. The students also undertake a long term research project in the fourth semester. The MBA students are given special training on Microsoft Dynamics NAV Classic and personality development programme, which are the integral components of the MBA programme. The experts from industry and academics are invited for interaction with the students. The placement activities are undertaken under the supervision of the faculty to facilitate placement.

PhD in Management Studies

       The Department also offers a PhD in program in Management Studies, in which students are required to undergo course work in first two semesters. The course work includes Research Methodology, Quantitative Techniques and Application of Statistical Package in addition to an in-depth study of the area in which the student wants to pursue research. The students are expected to produce a dissertation of international quality based on research in analytical and/or applied areas of management.

  • Established “Entrepreneurship Development and Business Facilitation Centre” on 29th September 2014.
  • Organised one day workshop on “Role of Entrepreneurship Development for Socio-Economic Change” on 29th September 2014 in the Department of Business Studies. Shri Prasanna, theatre personality, writer and social entrepreneur was the chief guest.
  • Shri Ramanujam, President, Rudset, Mysore delivered special lectures on “Personality Development” to the students on 8,9,10 & 11th May 2014
  • Prof. Jagadeesh, KSOU, Mysore delivered special lecture on “Entrepreneurship” to the students on 8,9,10 & 11th May 2014
  • Prof.Ken chad, UK, delivered special lecture on “Customer Centric Enterprises” on 2nd February 2015.
  • ERP Training in Finance, Marketing and Human Resource Management for ninety two hours was given to the students by Micro-Pro Ltd., Kolkata in January 2015.
  • Seventy four hours of Personality Development and Placement service was given to MBA students by FEEL EMPLOYABLE, CLHRD, a unit of AIM INSIGHTS, Mangalore in January 2015.

       First time in the history of Central University of Karnataka (CUK), within a very short span of time, students have grabbed the opportunity and entered the arena of competitions by participating and winning the FIRST PRIZE at ‘graVITas 2011’ an International knowledge Carnival, organized by the VIT University, Vellore, Tamil Nadu from 16th to 18th Sept. 2011. From all over India students from over 300 Management/ Engineering institutions had participated in this event.
