ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

       Globally tourism is a significant economic activity and its contribution is immense to the economic development. According to UNWTO Tourism sector contributes 10 percent to the world GDP, $1.5 trillion that is 7 percent of the world export and one in every 11 jobs in the world is created in the tourism. Every year 1.2 billion foreign tourists and 5-6 billion domestic tourist visit the different tourism destinations. Over the year tourism has grown tremendously and India is one of the fastest growing among emerging countries. According to NITI Aayog the hospitality, travel and tourism sector is a major driver of growth and employment worldwide especially in India where it made up 6.7 percent of the GDP and 9.24% or 49.8 million of the total employment. Foreign tourist arrival have increased from 5.1 million in 2009 to 8.1 million in 2015. India has significant potential to increase the number of tourist arrivals. As a highly human resource intensive tourism has capacity to generate large scale of employment. It is an important sector to create jobs amongst the poorest segments of the population and act as gate way for formal sector employment. Government of Karnataka, Ministry of Tourism estimates 4.3 million job creation over the next decade. Many industry experts feel that tourism and hospitality industry is facing the shortage of qualified and quality human resource in the country.

       In this background to produce entrepreneurs and provide quality human resource for the Tourism and Hospitality industry Central University of Karnataka, Kalaburagi has proposed for the establishment of Department of Tourism and Hotel Management under School of Business Studies with MBA in Tourism and Travel Management and Bachelor of Hotel Management and Catering Technology (BHMCT) programs. Accordingly UGC has sanctioned Department of Tourism and Hotel Management from the academic year 2019-20. To begin with university has started two year PG program MBA Tourism and Travel Management from this academic year with the intake of 10 (except supernumerary). For these seats university has received very good response from the student’s community through CUCET. University aims to build Department of Tourism and Hotel Management as one of the most sought centre of learning and teaching in the country for tourism and hotel management programs.
